Press Release: Men’s Health Awareness in South Africa: Dr Judey Highlights the Overlooked Issue of Razor Bumps and Scalp Care

Johannesburg, South Africa – June 2025 – In support of this year’s Men’s Health month, which falls in June, South African biomedical scientist Dr Judey is turning the spotlight on a common yet often neglected skincare issue facing many men: razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and scalp irritation - conditions that, if left unchecked, can lead to lasting skin damage such as keloid scarring.

While the conversation around men’s health often focuses on internal wellbeing, Dr Judey is urging South African men to pay closer attention to what’s happening on the surface - particularly the skin on the face and scalp.

“We know that many South African men, especially those with naturally curly or coarse hair, struggle with recurring shaving irritation,” says Dr Judey. “These concerns may seem minor, but they can have a serious impact on self-esteem, skin health, and even lead to permanent scarring if not managed correctly.”

Understanding the Science Behind Razor Bumps

Razor bumps, commonly referred to as “shaving rash,” occur when cut hair curls back into the skin instead of growing outwards. The body reacts to this as a foreign object, triggering inflammation, itching, and sometimes infection.

“In various communities especially, where coarse or tightly curled hair is common, razor bumps and ingrown hairs are frequently experienced,” explains Dr Judey. “And in our warm climate, where sweat and sebum production are higher, the risk of inflammation increases,” says Dr. Judey.

When It’s More Than Just a Bump: The Risk of Keloid Scarring

If shaving-related skin irritation is not properly treated, it can progress into keloids, which are raised, fibrous scars that are more prevalent in darker skin tones, and notoriously hard to treat.

“Keloid formation is more common in the South African population than many realise,” warns Dr Judey. “It’s far more effective and affordable to prevent these than to try and reverse them later.”

Face and Scalp Care: A Practical Routine for South African Men

With grooming habits varying widely across Mzansi, from clean-shaven looks to regular head shaving, Dr Judey recommends the following simple yet effective daily skincare routine for men:

Cleanse and Exfoliate Daily: Use a facial or scalp cleanser with salicylic acid or tea tree oil to gently exfoliate, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation.

Shave Smart

  • Always shave with a clean, sharp blade.

  • Shave with the grain - same direction as hair growth, never against it.

  • Avoid dry shaving - use a shaving gel or cream suited to your skin type.

Post-Shave Care: Apply a non-alcoholic aftershave balm or serum containing ingredients like niacinamide, witch hazel, or panthenol to reduce redness and support healing.

Moisturise and Protect: Keep skin hydrated with a lightweight moisturiser. For the scalp, especially if shaved, use a product that won’t clog pores and always apply SPF, even on overcast days.

Weekly Deep Clean: Exfoliate the scalp once or twice a week using a chemical exfoliant or gentle scrub to prevent build-up and ingrown hairs.

“Whether you’re going bald by choice or simply prefer a clean-shaven look, your scalp needs as much care as your face,” advises Dr Judey. “With our high ultraviolet (UV) index and tendency toward dryness in winter and oiliness in summer, a consistent care routine is essential for South African men.”

“Skincare is health care,” Dr Judey affirms. “By demystifying these everyday issues and equipping South African men with the right information, we can empower them to take control of their grooming and their wellbeing.”
